How to plan a move to the cloud

Moving to the cloud works best as a series of small, planned steps rather than a single big switch. This outline applies whether you run a handful of servers or a large estate.
1. Take stock
List the systems you run, who uses them, what they connect to and what they cost today. You cannot plan a move without knowing what is moving.
2. Decide what each system needs
- Move as it is, when it works well and speed matters.
- Improve on the way, when a small change brings savings or resilience.
- Replace, when a modern service does the job better.
- Retire, when nobody uses it any more.
3. Start small
Choose a low-risk system first. It lets your team learn the new environment and gives you real figures for cost and performance before you move the important things.
A good first migration is one nobody notices happened.
4. Plan for security and backup from day one
Decide who has access, how data is protected and how you would recover from a failure before anything moves, not after.
5. Keep an eye on cost
Cloud costs follow usage. Set budgets and alerts, review them monthly, and switch off what you no longer need. Done well, the cloud is cheaper to run and easier to scale than hardware you own.
